stage managed a show at neumos last night. headliner was called a fine frenzy. i don't think these recorded tracks even come close to how compelling and adorable their live show was. recorded it sounds way to produced and 103.7 the mountain. think karen o singing and playing keys for blondie but way mellow. her band switched instruments alot and were playing banjos and glockenspiel and slide guitar. singer was so cute and was so energetic.

support was a singer song writer named landon pigg. live they reminded me of a less poetic wilco and maybe semisonic or the fray. http://www.myspace.com/landonpiggmusic
among the oak and ash opened. they were just a banjo and 2 guitars and played southern gospel style folk. the banjo player looked like jason clackley with a bigger beard and it made me feel like i was on the bayou. these recorded songs seem to have a full band though and arent very interesting. http://WWW.MYSPACE.COM/AMONGTHEOAKANDASH

also i have been playing music with this band for a month or so. jon is an old friend and it's just been nice to find an escape from an ordinarily oppressive schedule. when it was proposed to me they told me it sounded like mae, anberlin and old jimmy eat world. there is a cello player and a very talented keyboardist. it's not entirely what i am looking for but its such a good group of guys and every practice ends up as a drunken ordeal trying to make it out of the basement. more to come on this later.

when jt's "lovestoned" transitions into "i think she knows" i feel truly at peace.
i recorded 8 demo songs for tacoma boys yesterday. rusty at the helm.
drove truck at pier 4 today.
new colonies record is the best release of 2009.
still reading truman. bout 600 pages to go. he is quickly becoming a hero of mine and engraining his outlook and philosophy deep into my own politics. he embodies so much of the american spirit that simply doesn't exist anymore. i am trying to say that i am going to run for president.
worthey and i got smashed at the rotting out show behind a fence at the fire station. show was blah. white wards and cool runnings were top notch.
monica dumped a beer on my head at the bar. i contend that i didn't deserve it.
got put in charge of a GWAR prep crew. worthey, sean and bob are gonna be my guys. we stand to make a good amount of money for a few hours work. we have to put down and plastic and carpet so there semen and blood don;t ruin the venue.

i am currently reading two books.
the first is called Truman, by david mculloch.
in the forward it said the book took ten years to write. it is really dense but is fascinating. it is the most complete biography i have read. despite harry truman growing up in the south and being quoted saying some seriously racist shit in his young 20's his character and upbringing are something completely lacking in the past 50 years of american history and idealism. spending 3 days on the coast of france and seeing the beaches in normandy where the d day invasion took place and visiting the national cemetery and walking through the villages really gave me a sense of pride in my country. part of my quest for knowledge and lust for reading and digging through history is that i think there are still reasons to be proud of our country and proud to be an american. i read a biography on thomas jefferson last week that also cemented these feelings.
the second book is called early christian heresies by joan o grady.
heresies is not defined in the book the way you and i would think of it... aka witches being burned at the stake, the crusades, persecution and defiance of the church which all comes out of the middle ages... the book defines heresy as it was meant in the first, second and third centuries... teachings that deviate from those of the orthodoxy which were the accepted teachings of the church of rome which is historically at the center of the faith because it was the church that st. peter started. the heresies were typically sects of the church that taught differently than the orthodoxy. many of them incorporated eastern and egyptian teachings into their ideas. to paraphrase... it examines the different sects of the time and shows how they used mythology, allegory and visual symbology to represent the different teachings of christ and his disciples. to some christ was a prophet, to others he was god, to some he was father, son and spirit. some stories from the new testament are taken literally to certain groups, some are myths and allegory... it is basically suggesting that the new testament that you and i have read was formed in the first 3 centuries. teachings, traditions, biblical prayers, baptism, wording of scriptures has all been aligned to the orthodoxy to weed out and silence certain myths, sects, allegories etc
this book is not trying to disprove christ or the christian faith. it is trying to show that visual, allegorical and mythological understandings that the last 2000 years of humanity have believed were forged out of many different interpretations by many different sects, schools, churches and teachers and the orthodox structure of the church may or may not have become what it was originally intended to be. i find it interesting. the story of lucifer being an angel that challenged god and was banished to hell was allegory to answer questions concerning why god would allow evil if he was perfect and created a perfect world. alot of the sects believed that souls began in heaven but lusted after knowledge and were trapped in natural bodies away from god. they believed that they would continual cycle into new bodies on earth until they were able to find god and rejoin him in heaven.
if nothing else i would love to have a sojourner record/song called adversus haereses or even better On the Detection and Overthrow of the So-Called Gnosis haha.
